London Open 24/7 — Pharmacies, Supermarkets, ATMs, ER

You’re standing on a London street at 3 AM with a splitting headache, a dead phone, and a passport that’s fallen into a puddle. The tourist office closed at 6 PM. The concierge shrugged. This page is the list of places that don’t care what time it is — and the numbers you need when the city is supposed to be asleep.

Pharmacies (Chemists) Open 24 Hours in London

Most London pharmacies close between 6 PM and 10 PM, and on Sundays many don’t open at all. The NHS runs a rotating late-night pharmacy list (ask at any pharmacy or call 111), but in practice you’ll use the two permanent 24-hour Boots stores:

  • Boots Piccadilly Circus – 44‑46 Regent Street, SW1Y 4PT. Sells nearly everything a normal Boots does, 24/7, with a pharmacist on site all night.
  • Boots Earls Court – 230 Earls Court Road, W8 6AA. Smaller but reliably open all night.

Download the Boots app – its “Open Now” filter saves you wandering closed doors. No other chain in central London matches their hours. NHS pharmacy rotation is theoretically available but so rarely needed that even locals point you to Boots.

Need Emergency Contraception After Hours?

Boots Piccadilly Circus has a pharmacist on duty 24/7 – you can buy emergency contraception over the counter at any hour. No appointment needed. If you’re under 16 or need a specific brand, call 111 to find a late-opening sexual health clinic.

24‑Hour Supermarkets

The big supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury’s) aren’t 24/7 across the board, but a handful of central Tesco Express and Sainsbury’s Local stores are. The most reliable:

  • Tesco Express – Tottenham Court Road (near Goodge Street)
  • Tesco Express – Liverpool Street (inside the station concourse)
  • Sainsbury’s Local – Victoria Station
  • Sainsbury’s Local – Moorgate

M&S Simply Food and Co‑op generally close by midnight or 1 AM. For a full grocery at 4 AM, stick to the Tescos and Sainsburys above. Check store hours on Google Maps before walking – some temporarily changed hours post‑COVID. If you arrive on a Sunday evening, say 11 PM, your only supermarket options will be those 24-hour Tesco or Sainsbury’s locations – most other grocery stores closed by 10 PM.

Hospital ER (A&E) – Free for Emergencies

London’s Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments are free at the point of use if you’re registered with an NHS GP or hold a valid EHIC/GHIC card. Without one, you’ll still be treated but billed later for non‑emergency care – expect around £150-£250 for a straightforward consultation, more if you’re admitted. If you’re a tourist without EHIC/GHIC, travel insurance is essential to cover those costs.

The six main 24‑hour A&E departments in central London:

  • St Thomas’ Hospital – South bank, just west of Westminster Bridge
  • University College Hospital (UCH) – Euston Road, near Warren Street
  • Royal London Hospital – Whitechapel Road, E1 (has a dedicated paediatric emergency department)
  • Guy’s Hospital – London Bridge, SE1
  • King’s College Hospital – Denmark Hill, SE5 (south of the river but big)
  • St Mary’s Hospital – Paddington, W2

Call 999 for an ambulance or walk in. For non‑urgent medical advice, dial 111 (free, English‑language, 24/7). They can tell you which A&E is least busy and even book you into a same-day appointment at an out-of-hours GP service if appropriate.

Minor Injuries Units – A&E Alternative

If you have a sprained ankle, minor burn, or infection that isn’t life-threatening, consider a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) instead of A&E. These walk-in centres treat non-serious conditions and are free for everyone, no billing questions. They’re open late but not 24/7; common ones include St John’s Wood MIU (8 AM–8 PM daily) and Finchley Memorial Hospital MIU (8 AM–8 PM). For a full list, call 111.

Dental Emergency

NHS dentists are scarce; for a genuine emergency:

  • London Dental Walk‑in Centre – near Charing Cross Hospital, open 24/7 for NHS urgent cases. Address: 1‑7 St Ann’s Road, W6 5RP (call 020 8741 9999 first).
  • Guy’s Dental Emergency – at Guy’s Hospital (London Bridge), 24/7 for registered patients and walk‑ins with severe pain.

If you have private insurance, any private dentist will see you faster, but expect £100+ for a consultation.

Vets – 24/7 Animal Emergency

Need a vet at 3 AM? The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in Camden runs a 24‑hour emergency service. Address: 4 Royal College Street, NW1 0TU. Call ahead on 020 7387 5734. Other 24‑hour vets exist (e.g., Medivet Hampstead, London Vet Specialists), but RVC is the central go‑to.

ATMs – 24‑Hour Access Without Fees

All major bank branches have lobby ATMs that accept cards 24/7:

  • Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, Santander – look for the distinctive logos on high streets.

Watch out for standalone ‘ATM lobbies’ that are not bank‑owned – they often charge fees (up to £3 per withdrawal). Stick to bank‑branded machines. For a full breakdown of cash vs card in London, see our London Money Guide.

Your Card Gets Declined or Swallowed – Now What?

If an ATM eats your card or declines a withdrawal, call your bank’s 24-hour hotline immediately (the number on the back of your card). For emergency cash, Western Union agents are in most central post offices (e.g., Trafalgar Square Post Office, open Mon–Sat 8 AM–6 PM, not 24h). Better yet, carry a backup card and keep a separate emergency stash of £50–£100 in cash.

Late‑Night Food – What’s Actually Open

London’s late‑night food scene is patchy. After the Underground shuts (~12:30 AM), your options shrink fast:

  • McDonald’s (some 24‑hour – Leicester Square, Oxford Street)
  • KFC and Subway near major stations (often open until 3‑4 AM)
  • Pret a Manger inside tube stations – closes at ~10 PM, not late.
  • Brick Lane – curry houses stay open until 12‑2 AM (e.g., Aladin, Tayyabs, but check individually). Also home to Beigel Bake (open 24/7) – a must for salt beef bagels at any hour.
  • Chinatown – several dim‑sum places go 24 hours, especially on weekends. Try New World (1 Gerrard Place) or Wong Kei (41 Wardour Street) for reliable late‑night eats.
  • Polo Bar – 176 Bishopsgate (near Liverpool Street). A classic 24‑hour greasy spoon serving full English breakfast, burgers, and chips all night.

Pub Closing Time – You Can Still Drink Late

Standard pub last orders: 11 PM Monday–Saturday, 10:30 PM Sunday. But many places in Soho and Shoreditch hold late licences until 1 AM (or 3 AM for clubs). Look for the “Late Licence” sticker on the door. Most cocktail bars in central zone stay open until 1–2 AM.

Lost Passport – What to Do Now

  1. Call 101 (non‑emergency police) to report it – get a crime reference number. Keep that number – you’ll need it for the embassy.
  2. Next business day: contact your embassy. US Embassy (Nine Elms), Australian High Commission (Aldwych), etc. Most have emergency lines for out‑of‑hours passport loss.
  3. For temporary travel documents, you’ll need to visit your embassy in person between 9 AM and 5 PM on weekdays. No 24‑hour passport replacement exists.

Lost Credit Card at 3 AM

Call your bank’s 24-hour number (memorise it or store it offline) to freeze the card immediately. Then order a replacement via the app – many banks can express deliver to a London address within 1–2 business days. Meanwhile, use a backup card or withdraw cash from your emergency stash at a bank ATM.

Lost Phone (Uber, Taxi, Tube)

  • Uber / Bolt – use the in‑app contact for lost items; drivers usually return items for a fee.
  • Black cab – call 020 7833 5000 (Transport for London Lost Property office, open Mon–Fri 9–4).
  • Tube / bus – fill out the TfL Lost Property online form (tfl.gov.uk/lost-property). You can also visit the office at 200 Baker Street (by appointment). If you lost it on a night bus, the system takes up to 3 working days to log items – fill out the form immediately for the best chance of recovery.

Emergency Numbers

  • Emergency (Police, Fire, Ambulance): 999
  • Non‑emergency police: 101
  • NHS 111 (medical advice) – free, 24/7. They can also help you find an out‑of‑hours GP or the nearest open pharmacy.

Tourist Information – Even When Everything’s Closed

The official Visit London website (visitlondon.com) has live opening hours and event calendars. In person, the Liverpool Street Station Info Centre (inside the main concourse) is open daily 8 AM–6:30 PM (shorter on Sundays). After that, your best bet is the website or this page.
